Introduction

Prosperous Mountain Dragon and Lion Dance (PMDLD) team was formed in Canberra in 2007 by a small group of dedicated youths. PMDLD is a non-profit, all-volunteer community organisation focussed on building a locally-based dragon and lion dance team for Canberra. PMDLD trains and performs throughout the year for public and private events.

PMDLD promotes a family-friendly and safe environment for its team members. PMDLD welcomes the Canberra community from all nationalities and ages. PMDLD continues to grow in size and presence through the commitment and investment of its members.

As a PMDLD team member, you are a key part of Canberra’s very first lion dance team. You will also be part of a global brotherhood of lion dance teams spreading the traditional and popular form of dragon and lion dance. You will form friendships, learn new skills and gain experiences in a safe team environment.

PMDLD Values

PMDLD was built on core values designed by the team to preserve the team and the artform. These core values must be upheld by all members at all times:

 - Show respect, integrity and trust

 - Engage, encourage, motivate, support and care for fellow team members

 - Actively communicate, work in teams and collaborate

 - Honour, have courage, discipline, strength and pride in being a member

 - Be family-focussed / sensitive and have fun

 - Demonstrate commitment, perseverance, resilience and positivity

 - Value skills and humility over materialism and ego.

Training and Performances

PMDLD provides training that is free of charge once a week (twice a week at times), except if a performance(s) is scheduled on a training day in which there will be no training that day. Training sessions will increase in the lead up to the Lunar New Year period each year, which starts on varying dates in January or February depending on the lunar calendar.

Training is important as a group on Sundays and we encourage members to train other days, where possible, through various means such as video or audio recordings. We value our members’ time at trainings so please arrive on time and be focussed during training to maximise the benefits, and show respect for everyone’s precious time. There is no fixed uniform for training, but please dress in appropriate activewear, sport shoes and bring a water bottle. Previous design uniforms are available if you’d like to wear it for trainings.

All team members (and their parents if members don’t have access to Facebook) will be informed of performances through Facebook or Signal (a messaging app similar to Whatsapp) on smart phones. Full schedule of bookings are found on the members page on Facebook so members can RSVP and plan ahead, while reminders via Signal will be the day before each training and performance.

Team members who have confirmed to attend a performance are to arrive on time and dressed in full, clean uniform (ie. Uniform shirt, pants and all black shoes) and to let team leaders know they have arrived and to help with performance preparation. Performances vary in times, durations and locations so please check with the team via our Signal chat group or the Facebook group if you have any questions or require assistance.

The Lunar New Year is the busiest and most important time for PMDLD every year. Performances generally start a week before the first day of the Lunar New Year, and multiple performances are scheduled across multiple days and nights for two to three weeks. It is very important that all team members attend as many performances as possible, acknowledging commitments to family, school and work.

Meals

After the performance(s), the team will often eat together to celebrate and bond with one another. For full-fee performances, PMDLD will pay for everyone’s meal to show its appreciation for members’ voluntary contribution to the performance and training.

For a community performance, we ask that members cover their own meal or snack after the performance because PMDLD will not be able to cover the expenses. We don’t charge for community performances or the provided amount does not cover the team’s meal expense. PMDLD will indicate on Facebook and/or Signal chat which performance is community. If not stated, it can be assumed it is a full-fee performance.

If there are multiple performances on the same day (especially during the Lunar New Year period), PMDLD will pay for members’ meal between performances and/or after the last performance for the day (but not before the first performance).

Photos

We have members who take photos of our performances and members to share internally or publish externally. If you do not wish for you or your child to have their photos taken, please let our photographers and/or David know and we will avoid their faces in photos. During public and private performances, our members will often be photographed by our members and the public. In a public space, PMDLD is unable to stop the public from taking photos of our members so please let the photographers know and/or step away from any situations where you or your child may be photographed.

Exclusivity

To maintain the integrity of our training methods and ensure consistency in our performances, members of Prosperous Mountain Dragon and Lion Dance are expected to train exclusively with our team. This helps us preserve our unique approach, uphold our standards, and protect the skills and techniques we have developed.

By training solely with our team, members contribute to a cohesive and unified performance style while also respecting the effort and knowledge that our instructors and senior members have built over time. This policy also ensures that all members are aligned with our safety practices, choreography, and teamwork dynamics.
